Ember was quietly eating the vegetarian breakfast that was served to her by Selon. She was still kind of sad over the loss of Jaga and being completely alone on a world where she couldn't understand anybody. Prome was too hot compared to Undinai and the Acen. She couldn't keep from sweating.
Unlike Undinai, Prome was a desert world. Sand was everywhere. The vegetation was little more than cacti, lichen and skinny little trees. It was hot all the time, it was a dry heat, however it was too warm for Ember's tastes. The wind blew the sand everywhere, making Ember cough frequently. Ember wanted to go home, with all the people she knew.
Prome had interplanetary communication, but the law forbid communication to other worlds. In the past, Prome had been attacked by invaders and barely survived. The people and the culture were almost lost forever. Half the population, at the time, left to start the race known as the Roms, whom Keles had been a part, the other half became very closed off from the rest of the universe. No communication was ever sent to Ember's home-world, for someone to retrieve her. Ember sighed and toyed with her food, while Selon watched somberly.
Selon understood how Ember felt. He could only help her adjust into her new life here. He had made arrangements to adopt her and had an audio translator made, based on the memory banks of the shuttle-craft that brought Ember to Prome. The data was transferred to Prome files, but the systems weren't compatible and some of the data became broken. Fortunately, there was enough information to create the translator. Ember might have an easier time adjusting, if she understood what was being said. He hated seeing the child so miserable. Moving forward, Selon placed a gentle hand on her arm.
Selon: I have something for you.
Ember: (looking at him with shining eyes) Huh? What?
Selon pulled a small device from his pocket. There was a small receiver on a wire attached to a clip. There was a switch and little microphone so she could learn the Prome language as well as understand it.
Selon: It will help you understand how we talk. It clips to your ear, like this.
Selon attached the translator to Ember's tiny ear. He slipped the small speaker in the ear canal, stepping back.
Selon: Can you understand me?
Ember's eyes grew wide, and she jumped out of the bed, spilling her plate of food, to hug Selon.
Ember: YES!!! Thank you, Mr. Selon. Thanks.
Selon returned the embrace, then he and Ember both cleaned up the mess she had made in her excitement. He could tell she would be a wonderful addition to his family. He already had a wife and son. HOW WOULD THEY TAKE TO EMBER? He wondered, stooping with a cloth to mop up the vegetables.
