Chapter 2:
Vampires, Fortresses, and Horses
Kelda thought for a few minutes in silence. “Okay, get us those things, well…three horses instead, since you’ll be coming too, and you can come with us to the Thieves’ Palace. Okay?” Tanto nodded to her, standing up and running into one of the other rooms. “I need to give something to your companion Kelda.” He came back seconds later, holding a short-sword in a jewelled sheath. “This will help you to protect yourself, child.” Ajanta took the sword and looked at it with quiet amazement. “Why’re you giving me this?” Tanto smiled and held up his own broadsword, the young elf’s skinny, yet muscular frame seemed to fit the weapon perfectly. “Both Kelda and I stole swords from the palace when we were prisoners there. They are enchanted so that they are swift and powerful, yet light and easy to handle. A while ago I was captured without my sword and managed to steal another from the armoury, apparently it is owned by the lady of the household. I used it to make my way out. It’s encrusted with emeralds and the hilt is inlaid with ivory. It’s really quite a beautiful weapon. Use it wisely.” Ajanta nodded, fastening the belt that came with it around her waist. “We’ll wait until nightfall, we need to break into the castle, but I need sleep right now. Good morning, ladies.” Tanto gave a little bow, chuckling slightly as he made his way out of the room.
Kelda lay back on her bed, watching as Ajanta sat carefully at the end of it. “You should get some rest you know, Ajanta. It’ll do none of us any good if you can’t help out.” Ajanta looked over at Kelda. “I suppose you’re right…where will I sleep though?” Kelda smiled and sat up, hugging Ajanta tightly, whispering. “Right here.” Ajanta was slightly surprised by this, she whispered back. “You know I don’t want to…but…it feels as if I should…” Kelda smiled slyly, running a hand down Ajanta’s spine, making her arch her back. “Then why don’t you?” Ajanta bit her lip, pulling back slightly and staring into Kelda’s eyes, seeing a sort of longing or hunger in the fiery pools. “I didn’t say no…” She kissed Kelda gently at first, wrapping her arms around her. Kelda lay back down, pulling Ajanta down with her, and then rolling over so that she was looking down at the raven haired girl, she slid her skilfully cold hands under Ajanta’s shirt, tracing her stomach before working her way up to Ajanta’s breasts. Ajanta gasped and shivered beneath Kelda, biting her lips to suppress the moan that seemed to be making its way out of her mouth. A tutting noise came from the door behind the women, Kelda turned, pulling her hands away slowly, seeing Tanto leaning against the door frame looking at the two. Ajanta blushed furiously, hiding behind Kelda as best she could. “You should know to close the door, Kelda…” Kelda scowled at Tanto, growling. “I thought you said you were going to sleep, asshole.” Tanto shrugged. “I felt something was going on…I decided to check up on you guys, just in case…seems you’re both fine, now I can sleep easier…but…well, maybe not…” With that the dark elf left the doorway, leaving Kelda holding the shivering Ajanta in her arms. “Let’s just get some sleep then…” Ajanta nodded to the older woman. They lay there, holding each other until they both fell asleep.
Just after sunset Tanto, Ajanta and Kelda left the tree, heading deeper into the forest. The owls hooted and they even heard the faint roar from what appeared to be a baby dragon, the further the three went the darker it became. The fires that were Kelda’s eyes easily cut through the darkness, as did Tanto’s elven ones, but Ajanta, having normal human eyes was clutching her sword in one hand and Kelda’s hand in the other. “Where exactly is this place?” She whispered to Kelda, who shushed her with a finger. “It’s deep in the forest, the dark elves have an acute sense of hearing, and we have to keep quiet from now on, okay?” Ajanta nodded, looking at the two red pinpricks of light that seemed to burn into her very soul. When Kelda started walking again, Ajanta was jerked forward, barely stopping herself from eliciting a sharp yelp. Tanto’s ears were twitching slightly, hearing something that Ajanta obviously couldn’t. “We’ll head around the fortress; the southern gate is not as heavily guarded as the east.” His voice carried to her ears, light and airy as the midnight breeze that played upon her face. Kelda and Ajanta nodded to the young dark elf, following him as he turned and carried on through the forest. Ajanta could see a few lights, through the trees to their left, as they skirted the castle of the Dark Elves. A voice filled their heads from the treetops. “You can’t get in that easily…surely you should know that by now, Kelda and Tanto…Who’s the third wheel with you?” A pale face appeared before them, two dark lines running down its near white cheeks. “Scout…?” Kelda was obviously surprised by the arrival, but familiar with the looming features. “Who else would be here, love?” The face Kelda had named as “Scout” smiled deviously, looking at Ajanta. “So? Who is she? You haven’t replaced me already, have you?” Ajanta was slightly taken aback, who was this person? Was she Kelda’s friend…or past lover? Ajanta shook her head furiously, pushing the thoughts away. Kelda blushed deeply, knowing that at least Ajanta couldn’t see the heat engulfing her face. “Scout…that was a long time ago…but…we need some help getting into the fortress. I know you can help me.” Kelda raised her hand slowly, stroking the pale face. The near white features moved to Kelda’s hand, nuzzling it. “Any other vampire would decline you this, Kelda. But as always you have me under your spell. I can get you in.” Kelda smirked, moving ever so slightly to kiss Scout. “Thank you, Scout. Shall we get going then?” Ajanta was still very confused; she didn’t really like this form of confusion. In fact, she hated it, and at the very least she dis-liked Scout. A thud brought Ajanta back to reality; a body had fallen from the trees as Scout went out of sight. “They’ll find him within a few hours, and then they’ll panic. So I think it would probably be best if we hurried this up, don’t you?” Scout said from above, wiping the blood from her mouth and staring down at the Dark Elf soldier’s lifeless body.
The four walked towards the south gate, only Ajanta’s feet made any noise, the other three stayed silent. Scout seemed to have a smile pasted onto her face. Ajanta knew for sure, this was a bad idea.
