(3 years later)
Jaga was packing to go to Undinai. A successor had been chosen to lead the religion and Shyera was scheduled to be publicly executed. Jaga needed to be there. Ember watched him, her little face wrinkled in indignation, clutching a tiny doll made of cloth with red yarn for hair and two glass beads for eyes.
Ember: Why can't I go, too? (stamping her tiny feet.)
Jaga: (still continuing to pack.) We've been through this before, I have to go because it's important. Sometimes you can't come with me. Jarek, will take good care of you.
Ember: Humph!
Ember ran out of the room, nearly knocking Jarek over as he was entering.
Jarek: She's not happy.
Jaga: Neither am I. However, I must be there for Shyera. This is all Jareth's fault.
Jareth chose the religion's successor, because he felt Shyera was taking too long. He chose Taya, a young woman that wasn't even a part of the religion. She had no mystical intuition what so ever. Taya was nothing more than a clerk, responsible for documenting the affairs of state. Taya was too mousy and quiet to take a commanding lead. Jareth only chose her because she was easily controlled. Taya had absolutely no mind of her own.
Jarek: Jareth will lead to the downfall of our great nation.
Jaga: Indeed.
...
While Jarek and Jaga were discussing politics, Ember made her way to the shuttle-bay. She knew Jaga had to go, she just didn't like missing him when he was away. THIS TIME, I'M GOING WITH HIM. She thought as she climbed aboard shuttle 13. Ember hid herself under the bunk and remained absolutely silent.
...
Jaga: Well, that's done.
Jaga slammed a full suitcase shut. Picking it up, he made his way to the hanger, escorted by Jarek. To Jaga's dismay, Ember wasn't there to see him off.
Jaga: I can't wait, take good care of her, please?
Jarek: I always do. Safe journey.
Jaga trudged into shuttle 13, plopped his bag on the floor. While the door closed and the airlock tightened, Jaga sat at the controls. Jaga sighed to himself starting up the large machine that would take him to see his sister for the last time, at the same time as the hanger doors were opening. Jaga piloted the craft out of the ship and a safe distance away before engaging the autopilot. Once the autopilot had been activated, Jaga maneuvered himself over to the bunk, lying down he reflected on Shyera and fell into a deep, fitful sleep. The trip would take a day and a half. Under the bed, Ember was also resting peacefully, still huddled with her doll.
---
Through closed eyelids, Jaga felt someone staring at him. He open his eyes and was surprised to find Ember looking at him.
Jaga: YOUNG LADY, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING HERE?!?
Ember cringed, as Jaga stood up and placed her on the bed he where he was previously sleeping. The radio beeped, indicating an incoming transmission. Walking over, Jaga picked up the receiver. Jarek's voice was on the other end of the radio.
Jarek: Excuse me for interrupting your trip, sir, but I seem to have lost Ember.
Jaga: I know full well where SHE is. She is here with me. (Glares at Ember, sitting sheepishly on the bed.) It's too late for me to turn back now, Ember will have to come with me.
Jarek: Understood. Ship Out.
The radio goes dead and Jaga returns to receiver to it's slot. Venturing over to stand in front of Ember with his arms folded across his chest.
Jaga: Well, young lady, do you have an explanation?
Ember: I-I-I didn't want to see you go.
Jaga: Jarek would have taken care of you, and I always come back.
Ember: I'm sorry.
Jaga sighs, again, and sits next to the girl, placing an arm around her small shoulders.
Jaga: Sometimes, I have to go to places where little girls could get hurt. I don't want to see you get hurt, so I have to leave you behind just to keep you safe.
Ember was crying, now, and snuggling so tightly against Jaga's chest that her apologies were muffled.
Jaga: There, there. Don't cry.
Rising, Jaga goes over to his suitcase, opens it, and pulls out a large white hanker-chief. He comes back and puts the kerchief on Ember's head.
Jaga: You're coming with me, but you have to wear this over your hair when we are out in the open. Okay?
Ember: Okay.
Ember straightens the cloth, tying it under her chin, and using a hand-held mirror, Jaga had given her, to make sure all her hair was covered.
