Jaga was holding the infant, Ember, while the docking clamps locked onto Shuttle 13. There was a slight bump, Jaga looked at the child, who merely opened a single sleepy eye, before closing it again, breathing softly. There was a few more minutes wait, as the airtight seals were set in place. Jaga could see a 15-year-old Jarek, standing straight but staring down, and the first officer, Keles, through the windows of the spaceship, Marren. Finally, the doors slid open, allowing the Commander Jaga to come aboard.
Jaga: Greetings, Mr Keles. Anything happen, while I was away?
Keles: All things well, Commander.
Jaga: Very well. I will be on the bridge soon. Dismissed.
Keles pivoted to go to his post on the bridge, the command center of the Marren. Keles had served with Jaga for many years. He was a good officer, his manner was stoic, however, in an emergency, Keles was the fiercest creature in the universe. Keles was a Rom. A Rom's most distinctive features, were the points on the tips of their ears and their mocha skin-tone. Roms are an off-shoot of the Prome race. The Roms rebelled, and left the Prome homeword millennia ago. Nobody in the Empire had seen a Prome. The Roms lived on a planet two systems away from Undinai. They were discovered when the Undinain Military first took to space. The Undinai Military had a most impressive force and the Roms had the best means to supply it. It was a good treaty, Rom received protection and Undinai received man power and goods to survive. A Fire reincarnation initially set up the treaty between Rom and Undinai, those many centuries ago.
Jaga: (turning toward his son) Hi, Jarek.
Jarek: (attempting to straighten further) Hello, sir.
Jaga: I have a mission for you.
Jarek looked up. Jarek: Me, sir?
Jaga: Yes. Come, walk with me to our living quarters.
Jaga started down the hall, with Jarek struggling to keep up with his father's long strides. Together they reaches the Command Dorm living quarters. Jarek rushed forward to open the door for Jaga, who was still carrying Ember. There were two rooms. A small bedroom and a large dwelling area. Jarek resided in the bedroom and Jaga slept on the beat-up old sofa in the other room. The dwelling area was large enough to split in half to make a room for baby Ember. Jaga entered followed be Jarek.
Jarek: What's going on, father? (after closing the door.)
Jaga: This is your cousin, Ember.
Jarek: Okay...
Jarek: I want you to look after her when I am on shift and/or away on government business.
Jarek casts a confused look at the drooling infant. He had never been around a baby before, and he didn't want to break the little thing. When Jaga said the word 'Mission,' Jarek thought he would be doing something important, like plotting a course on a star map. Jarek was pretty good at navigation. But a baby?
Jarek: Ummm... how?
Jaga: It's simple, you feed her, clean up her diapers, and hold her when she cries. I used to do the same thing when you were this age.
Jaga went over to a keypad on the wall, punched in a few numbers, and a bottle of formula appeared in a small niche in the wall. Taking the bottle, Jarek sat down in a comfy chair, to show a bewildered Jarek how to feed the baby.
Jaga: I show you how to change her diaper, later.
Jarek was startled when Jaga placed the infant in his arms. He remained silent and watched as Jaga took a cushion from the couch and put it on the floor.
Jaga: I need to check up with the ship. While I'm gone, Ember can sleep here. I'll bring a crib from supply, when I come back.
Jaga took Ember, again, and gently placed her on the pillow. Standing up, Jaga proceeded to the door, exiting, leaving Jarek to collapse in the comfy chair Jaga used to feed the baby. WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH THIS? Jarek kept thinking over and over again.
