Chapter 4 (a few days after Ember's Birth)
Jareth had been pacing all night. Shyera left 37 weeks ago, and he couldn't get any word from inside the convent. In a wave of frustration he ran out in the middle of the night, straight for the convent and Shyera. His approach was spotted by Jun, the chief attendant of the convent.
Jun: Sovereign, why do you grace our presence?
Jareth: I've come to see my wife. She has been gone for quite some time, I merely wish to see how my family is doing.
Jun: You're wife is fine. The convent is designed for peace of mind, on the part of the mother, child, and her family. During pregnancy, many hormones interact and cause irregularities, with mood and behavior. Thus, the Expecting Mothers, are brought here until the blessed day their child arrives, and their emotions stabilize enough for them to return and begin raising their families. The only men allowed are the attendants and clerics that serve them. When the lady is ready she will return to her family.
Jareth: Spare me the lecture, Jun. I need to see my wife. The baby should have been born already.
Jun: I cannot let you pass, Jareth.
Jareth withdrew a silver dagger.
Jun: (upon seeing the knife)You would spill blood on this holy place.
Jun, prepared to defend himself, but Jareth was much faster. Jareth lunged at Jun. Jun attempted to catch the blade, but missed and the dagger plunged straight into his chest. Jun lay on the floor looking up pitifully at Jareth as he continued farther into the convent.
Jareth was following pure instinct. Shyera should have had the baby by now. Why had she not returned to him so they could care for the infant and raise it to lead the people as the rightful heir? Jareth came upon the room with a thin, sleeping Shyera. No evidence of pregnancy or child could be found.
Jareth: SHYERA!!!! Where is our child? (hissing) what have you done?
Shyera was startled awake, staring at the intruder, in the dim light.
Shyera: You are not to be here, Jareth.
Jareth: (grabbing, Shyera) TELL ME!!! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!?
Shyera stared coldly at Jareth, remaining defiantly silent. Jareth struck Shyera with all his strength, knocking her across the room. Shyera continued glaring from the place on the floor where she sat.
Jareth: GUARDS!!! Shyera, you will pay for this treachery. (to the guards, that had arrived) Guards, take the priestess to a cell, to await an investigation into her lies. (to Shyera) There will be an investigation.
The guards walked over to Shyera, gently picking her up off of the floor. Shyera, stared blankly ahead as she was led out of the room. Jareth followed a few minutes later still fuming.
