Chapter 1:
Dark Elves, Witches, and Demons
Cold darkness swept behind the cloaked figure, as they staggered towards the tavern. The masculine person clutched their leg, falling in the mud, spattered with rain. The Tavern doors exploded open as the tall figure burst in. The patrons looked up, some snorting with laughter, all of them returned to their drinks. A young girl with ebony hair and hazel eyes walked forward, leaning to the stranger. “Do you wish for help, good sir?” The “good sir” nodded, shaking with cold and blood loss. The girl, who looked nigh on twenty years old; put her arm around the foreigner, helping him to his feet. She guided him into the back rooms and laid him on a small hay bed. “Do you require assistance with your wounds?” The young woman asked him. “No.” The stranger spoke with an oddly female voice. “Though I must warn you, There are Dark Elves on the loose in the forest…they will be…looking for…me…” The outsider removed their hood, revealing a beautifully pale face of a woman in her late twenties. Her platinum blonde hair was particularly short, and showed off her slightly pointed ears, her eyes seemed to burn with hate and rage, taking away from the heavenly face. Atop her head was a small tiara. “Y-you…you’re so beautiful…who are you?” The wench stared in awe. “I am the princess of the Elven fortress of Kaido. My nam-“the girl bowed her head. “Your highness…I know your name…it need not be uttered in my presence. Your description does you no justice. You are more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. Please. Allow me to attend to your wounds. I am Ajanta. Ajanta Keros. I am your humble servant.” Ajanta did not look at the face of the elven princess as she went about healing her legs. “Princess? Why are the Dark Elves after you?” The princess heaved a sigh, staring at the ground. “Ajanta…you seem like the kind of person I can trust. So I shall tell you a secret, something that only one other person knows of. It is the difference between my life and my death…I am not Princess Arnos. I am a thief; you will know my true name before I say it. Just as you knew the princesses. I stole a form of power from the Dark Elves. I am the elven-demon, Kelda. Please…do not scream.” Ajanta stared in shock, and then smiled. “So…you are Kelda the master thief?” Kelda nodded. “Prove it, then.” Kelda stood up on her newly healed legs, scanning the room carefully. “Do you have a timepiece in your pocket?” Ajanta nodded. Kelda smiled and shook her head. “Look again. I’m sure you don’t” As Ajanta looked through her pockets for her pocket watch, Kelda produced a small golden watch on a chain. Ajanta looked up at her in astonishment. “You really are tremendously exceptional. How in the name of Lord En-“ As Ajanta was naming the God, Kelda fell to her knees, clutching her head. “What’s wrong? Do you have any more wounds?” Kelda shook her head, closing her eyes tightly. “Please…I may only be part demon…but the names of…icons such as he…they weaken me and impair my thoughts.” Ajanta helped Kelda to her feet, nodding in understanding. “I am sorry for that Kelda. I didn’t realise.” Kelda smiled, bringing her hand up to Ajanta’s chin and pulling it into a soft kiss before whispering tenderly. “Don’t worry…impaired thoughts aren’t my problem alone…” Ajanta turned red and backed away, almost tripping over her own feet. Kelda kept her eyes on Ajanta’s slender body, watching the raven haired woman as she walked to the door. “You can sleep in here for the night…I-I’ll be in the next room…should you have any problems with your wounds, or anything…” Ajanta ran out of the room quickly, still blushing furiously.
Near morning Ajanta woke up slowly. Getting out of bed she walked down the darkened hallway, to the room where she had left Kelda sleeping. She held a candle into the room and saw that the other woman was putting on a rucksack and her cloak. “Kelda!” She said in a harsh whisper. “What the hell are you doing? I thought you were staying here.” Kelda walked forward, looking Ajanta in the eyes. “I must travel in the sunlight, which means I leave at dawn.” Ajanta pulled Kelda into a hug. “I’m coming with you Kelda. You don’t think you can tell me a secret like that and then just leave me here, do you?” Kelda stood completely still, falling into the hug after a few moments. “Hurry then…I’m leaving in an hour.” Ajanta nodded running back to her own room.
Ajanta and Kelda stood facing the sunrise in silence. “You’re sure you want to do this?” Kelda asked, not tearing her eyes away from the blood red skies. Ajanta nodded, fixing her bag and her cloak, and then beginning to walk forward. “We’re heading to a place only the greatest thieves dare roam…the Kaido Underground… until we get there, I am the princess Arnos, and you are my faithful servant, Eltaria. We were on a hunt when we got lost in the forest; we lost our horses and are making our way back to Kaido. Once we are in Kaido but not in the thieves’ palace, we are two sisters, looking for our aunt’s house.” Ajanta nodded along with this. “You really have thought this through haven’t you?” Kelda smiled and nodded. “But I think people will know who you are. So this will be necessary, close your eyes.” Ajanta put her hands on the sides of Kelda’s face, humming gently, Kelda kept her eyes closed, whispering to Ajanta. “What’re you doing?” Ajanta ignored this and began muttering words in a strange language called Kopi (The language of the North Elves, pronounced like copy), she then kissed Kelda deeply, and Kelda stood completely still, not sure if this was part of the spell, but after a moment or two she wrapped her arms around Ajanta, kissing back passionately. When Ajanta broke the kiss Kelda opened her eyes slowly. “What was that all about?” Ajanta blushed a bright red. “The spell is to make you look more like Arnos…the kiss was…well the kiss was just me…” Kelda smiled, turning back to the sun. “Time to go I should think.” Kelda started to walk towards some distant mountains, with Ajanta following quickly behind.
After a short walk the pair reached a dark forest. “This is where the Dark Elves’ colony is. They don’t come out in the daylight, so we should be okay…But Ajanta…you are not completely human…are you?” Ajanta shook her head. “You wouldn’t have been able to perform even such a simple spell if you were only human.” Ajanta looked at the ground. “I have no idea what I really am…” Kelda nodded. “Well…whatever you’re species, you’re still beautiful.” Ajanta blushed again. “It’s very dark in the forest…best to bring up some light.” Kelda picked up a stick and held her hand over it, chanting in the language of demons, when she stopped chanting a flame burst from her hand and lit the stick. “Onwards we go.” She said smiling as Ajanta stared astonished.
The trees were thick and close together, after a while Ajanta wasn’t sure if any sunlight made it inside, or if the Dark Elves would know it was daytime. Every crackle beneath their feet made her jump. Kelda however walked almost silently, she kept going through the forest until she was sure they were right in the middle. She leaned against the trunk of a great oak tree. Ajanta looked around the forest, seeing nothing but darkness between the bulky trunks. Kelda tapped a knot in the oak tree, and then hit the bark as though she was knocking a door. Part of the trunk slid open, and a yawning elf with skin and hair that had obviously not seen much light stood there. “Kelda…you bitch, I told you not to wa- not another one, Kelda…please goddess no…I’m not taking you and your women in any longer.” Kelda smiled and Ajanta blushed brightly. “Glad to know you still care, Tanto. This is Ajanta; we’re on the run from your people. We need your assistance.” Tanto nodded lazily, yawning again and rolling his eyes. “I swear if you hadn’t saved my life I’d close my door right now and let the other elves kill your sorry ass. Get in before one of the patrols come by.” Ajanta looked confused; staring at the dark elf Kelda had named Tanto. “I thought we were on the run from the dark elves, why’re we being helped by one?” Tanto walked into the tree again, Kelda followed a bit further behind with Ajanta. “Tanto is also on the run from his people. I used to live here in this tree when I was planning to steal the power source of the elves. One day I was on the lookout for patrols when Tanto ran head-on into my tree, he was unconscious when I saw a bunch of soldiers heading for him. I fought off the soldiers and brought him in here. When I left a few months ago I told him the tree and everything inside it was his, he took It literally I suppose, he’s gotten rid of all the lights.” Tanto snorted from up ahead, and Kelda poked his leg with the torch she was still holding. “Quiet you!” Tanto jumped and screeched. “What the fuck, Kelda!? That’s fucking hellfire!!” Kelda laughed richly, clutching her stomach. “Still got that little pet peeve I see. Poor Tanto.” She said, trying not to laugh anymore. Tanto bared his pointed teeth. “Psychotic bitch…I’ll show you pet peeve…Mark Endau I will have payback.” Kelda fell to her knees, moaning in pain. “You little bastard,” all this time Ajanta looked on, trying to understand the relationship between the elves…she was still trying to work it out by the time they got to the large room that served as a kitchen and a living room. “You guys bitch at each other like brother and sister.” She told them as they all sat down on the floor. “Hmm…I never thought of it like that before…but technically Tanto and I are considered as cousins because of our race. We North elves talk about Dark Elves as our, “Dark skinned cousins” and so on. Quiet annoying really. North elf culture is all about politics and loyalty and shit like that. Luckily I was born into the other side of my family.” Kelda said with a vaguely sadistic smile as she ended her last sentence, baring her pointed Demon teeth. “Shut the hell up and tell me what you need so you can get out of here. I wanna go back to sleep y’know.” Tanto groaned at the two women. Kelda shrugged, leaning back on her elbows. “I succeeded in my task…now all I need are a couple of horses and some noble clothes, along with a maid’s uniform.” She said, winking to Ajanta. Tanto raised an eyebrow and shook his head. “I’ll help…but I want something in return.” Kelda nodded. “I want to come with you.”
